Hospitality Jobs in Australia - Industry Overview

Tourism is very important to the Australian economy. When people think of hospitality and tourism they think of traditional organisations such as restaurants, Motels and Hotels, airlines, Clubs and Casinos and leisure organisations. However tourism and hospitality organisations underpin a wide range of industries. These industries include but are not limited to organisation that provide; car hire, trades such as air-conditioning service, the building industry, plumbing etc, entertainment organisations, recruitment agencies, IT companies, taxi operators and retail services.

The following are some statistics that might help you to understand how large the Tourism and Hospitality industry is in Australia and how much scope and opportunity there is for aspiring professionals (this may seem boring to some of you however it will hopefully put the industry and its employment options into perspective).

  • 2002-03 more than $73 billion worth of tourism goods and services consumed.
  • 2002-03 tourism directly generated 540,700 jobs in Australia.
  • 2002-03 all other related industries employed an additional 41,500 people
  • 2002-03 New South Wales accounted for 38% of all businesses in Australia, 31% of all employment and generated just over 34% of total income.
  • Australian cafes and restaurants generated over $10 billion in income during 2003-04
  • In 1997-98 just over $1.4 billion spent on wages and salaries in the cub industry alone which only employed just over 12% of total tourism employment.
(Source: Australian Bureau of statistics) 540,700 jobs in Australia alone! That number has now increased of course. And what about employment opportunities over seas once you have the skills you need. What this means to you is that you should have no problems finding a job in this industry if that is what you want. But is it that simple?

Well, yes finding a job in the Australian Hospitality industry is simple with a little guidance. However finding a job that offers training, career progression and other opportunities is infinitely more difficult. Also given the large amount of different organisation out there how will know which type of establishment you are suited to.

There are many factors to consider when you are choosing a potential employer such as

  • the organisations goals and objectives
  • the physical environment
  • the culture of the organisation
  • the size and location of the organisation
  • your goals and objectives (apart from being paid)
If you have little or no experience in the industry then these questions take a backward step to gaining practical on the job training. However if you are planning a career within the industry than it is very important to have an understanding of these factors and how they will guide your career progression.

. After last post on marketing without search engines, I decided to follow up with a strategy you can use to get quality free traffic. One of the easiest ways to get visitors to your web site is to spend money. Nothing is more effortless then paying for traffic. But if you can’t afford it or don’t want to pay, there’s an equally simple but free way to get traffic: ad swaps.
